Dead Space was, looking back now, one of the most iconic and influential games on the PlayStation 3. Among its many innovations was the way it integrated traditional UI elements into the action itself, like Isaac Clarke’s infamous illuminated spinal cord, which reflected his health status. But perhaps most famous of all is the fact that it shied away from the traditional headshot-focused gameplay of other horror titles, adopting a system where you used mining tools to effectively dismember your enemies.
This added a bunch of strategic wrinkles to the gameplay: shoot out a foe’s legs, and you’d significantly slow it down; take out its arms and it wouldn’t be able to attack you quite as easily. Unsurprisingly, then, the release’s upcoming PS5 reimagining will double down on these elements, with a pre-production livestream earlier today stressing that dismemberment will be deeper and more disgusting than ever before.
So, what can you expect, then? Well, developer Motive is adding depth to the mechanics by augmenting different weapons with unique properties depending on the type of enemy you use them on. For example, some firearms will shred specific enemies, while others will stun. The idea, from what we gather, is that you’ll need to think carefully about what you want to achieve and how you’re going to go about it. In other words, you won’t be able to rely entirely on your trusty Plasma Cutter for the entirety of the campaign.
With regards to the UI elements, rather than having numbers flying off your decomposing foes like in modern shooters like Destiny 2, you’ll instead see flesh and bone fall off. The amount of meat on a monster will determine its remaining health, so you’ll visibly be able to see when an appendage is near to snapping off, which is both disgusting and ingenious. Unfortunately, the game’s barely a year into development, so this is still ridiculously early days. Don’t expect to be zero-gravity leaping into this one for a few years yet.

These honestly sound less like changes as such and more like updates along the lines of the original concept. Which sound good to me!
Give me a Plasma Cutter and I'll take on any Necromorph you can dream up. Except that one that you can't kill!
Always amazes me how much the interiors of ships/stations are so grimy and wet. Then you have Star Trek…
I actually love this change as I almost exclusively used only the plasma cutter in the original. I think I occasionally used the assault rifle for the little head guys and the mine thrower thing on the big guys but yeah this sounds great to me.
@Korgon
Agreed, the other weapons didn't have the effectiveness of dismemberment like the Plasma Cutter did. You were often better off using credits on armour and suit upgrades.
I bet this and the callisto protocol both come out in 2023... I need to get some vitamins.
Wow, that looks fantastic. Look at that lighting!
@Korgon have to disagree. I found the line gun and the upgraded force gun could ve very handy when needed. Although if i remember right there was a plasma cutter only trophy in the original and i dont remember struggling lol
@BoldAndBrash
Don't get me wrong I did use the other weapons on the first couple of play throughs and they had their uses but I always found the plasma cutter most useful, especially when upgraded. Which was odd bearing in mind it was the default weapon.
@The_Moose I like it though, it doesn't become useless like other games make the default weapon(RE8 being an example) in later sections of the game.
Looks pretty good. I still think the original Dead Space still holds up.
Glad to hear that. Also it kinda sucked that the first weapon you got in the fame was the best one. Hope they keep the upgrade mechanics in some form.
I’ll be buying this, much like the new resident evil but not for full price. When it’s around half price or less. Games that are significantly under 20 hours (to beat the main quest line and the side missions) aren’t worth full price
Glad to hear they are leaning into the dismemberment angle. If I recall the emphasis on its use in the original lessened as the game went on. Sounds great and looks just like I remember it.
@Grimwood Are you sure about that? I think it reviewed well at the time and I personally thought it was brilliant. Loved it. I know what you mean about history being warped, but I'm not sure this is one of those instances.
I like it. I thoroughly enjoyed the first go at it and I think these new differences are a breath of fresh air. Those things that the original had keep the original unique to itself.. and these new changes will be just enough to simultaneously be the experience of revisiting an epic classic and experiencing something new and never seen before.
I’ll be getting up close and personal with the disc ripper. Love me a good carve ‘em up
This looks so good I'm probably going to get it and then I'll regret it when it gives me both heart and metal issues
this looks great i can't wait!!
@JapaneseSonic Yeah, sounds like a 2023 game to me.
@kingbreww I gladly pay full price for a great 20 hour game. Then a stretched out AC game that is double the playtime which makes me happy when i finish because i feel i wasted so much time on going through the motion and finishing up because i want the Platinum.
@Flaming_Kaiser agreed. Can’t stand the inanity of AC games. If you’re gunna be that long at least be enthralling. Unfortunately though Dead Space is only just over half the time you mentioned. To be clear (and I’ll edit my comment) when I say a 20 hour plus game I’m referring to the time it takes to complete the main quest line and the side missions only. I don’t have the time nor the inclination to watch YouTube videos so I can find all the collectibles etc to get platinums
@kingbreww Did you play HZD the only game i ever played doing collectables right. Interesting back stories and pieces that fill in the lore so awsome. To be honest one of my favorite games Heavenly Sword was like 6/7 i payed full price and i still would buy it again at this price. This game was brilliant and loved it damn you Sony for not going further with such a great IP. Nariko is still one if not my favorite mains but then again Aloy and Ellie are also awsome.
@Flaming_Kaiser yeh I did for sure. Brilliant game that one. Not so much into the bash type games unless it’s done perfectly and is story HEAVY. Which HZD clearly is. I never buy anything day one as I give it time for the bugs to be fixed. Usually 3 months, but with the new Horizon I’ll cut that to one month as I’m sure being Sony it will be released in good shape and I just can’t wait another 3 months haha. The other game never played it
@kingbreww The new HZD has a great CE but no PHYSICAL disc at that price for 169 pounds WTF🤬
@Flaming_Kaiser Yeh that is weird. Well I mean I’ve never even seen that before. If it’s been done, which it quite possibly could have been definitely not on a major major AAA like this
@kingbreww I have solution i sold the code and bought the physical release yes i know im part of the problem..... ☹️
@Flaming_Kaiser gotta do what ya gotta do
@kingbreww Still feel like a idiot for doing it...
I was happy the regata version sold out. 🤪
@kingbreww Still feel like a idiot for doing so and i do know why they do it and its really low the steelcase is a extra slap in the face. As if the digital for a box they cant place anywhere. 😒
Whats a game you are waiting for waiting i have quite a few. Dino Crisis, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legia, Parasite Eve, Dark Cloud,Syphon Filter.😁
@Flaming_Kaiser I’m waiting patiently on Far cry 6, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 (The wife has a Series X and it’s free day one on gamepass), Chernobylite, probably Hogwarts legacy, HFW of course, for Cyberpunk to be finally fixed and released on Ps5 and the future new Skyrim and Fallout games (the solo offline games, not the online crap). Oh and Starfield
@kingbreww We have such a different taste still great selection. 😁👍
@Flaming_Kaiser https://youtu.be/8L5ZLuggSpM
@kingbreww Cyberpunk
Looking forward to playing this on my series x
